SHERRI COTHRUN CANDIDATE FOR THE 246TH FAMILY LAW COURT OF HARRIS COUNTY
HOUSTON, TX – Sherri Cothrun, attorney, is the Democratic Nominee for Judge of the 246th Family District Court of Harris County in the March 2, 2010 Democratic primary.
A 29-year practicing attorney in the Houston area, Ms. Cothrun is certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and is one of the less than one percent of Texas attorneys certified as a Family Law Specialist. In 2008, she was named one of Houston’s Top Lawyer for the People by HTexas magazine. She belongs to the State Bar of Texas, Houston Bar Association, the Texas Family Law Foundation, Texas Bar Foundation, Houston Bar Foundation, Texas Academy of Family Law Specialists, Gulf Coast Family Law Specialists and the Burta Rhodes Raborn Inns of Court.
“I believe my experiences as a Board Certified Family Specialist, a trained mediator and arbitrator, as well as my personal experience as a wife and stepmother makes me uniquely qualified to serve in this position. As a trained mediator, I have developed critical skills in listening and understanding the dynamics of relationships,” Cothrun said. “I will use my knowledge of the law, my experience and my skills to assist and serve the families of Harris County.”
The daughter of educators, Ms. Cothrun has been active in the Houston community as a volunteer in the Habitat for Humanity, The Salvation Army, the Dispute Resolution Center and the Center for the Healing of Racism. Additionally, she is passionate about the protection of women’s reproductive rights and has been a tireless advocate for women of all ages. She was the President of the Board of Directors for Texas Abortion Rights Action League and a member of Planned Parenthood of Southeast Texas C-4 Political Board and is the immediate past Board Chair of Jane’s Due Process, a non-profit organization with the mission to provide pregnant teenagers with legal representation.
A Texas transplant by way of Arizona and New Mexico, Cothrun received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Political Science from New Mexico State University and her law degree from Pepperdine University School of Law. In 1981, she moved to Houston and passed the Texas Bar Exam beginning her legal career in Harris County, Texas. Married for thirteen years to landscape architect, David Artz, Sherri is stepmother to their two sons, Zach and Sam, ages 24 and 22. Sherri has found her experience as a stepmother has helped her become a better family lawyer and mediator. She has a great appreciation and understanding of the issues relating to step and blended families which are frequently before the Family Courts.
“I believe the District Courts that have jurisdiction over family law matters are among the most powerful of all courts in the State of Texas. These courts decide the disposition of property, and most importantly, issues relating to children,” says Cothrun. “As Judge, I will commit to being knowledgeable of the law and to make rulings based on the unique facts and family before me, to be fair and impartial regardless of the race, religion, gender or sexual orientation of those involved.” Cothrun also states she will fully utilize all court personnel to improve the efficiency of the court.
